Education Ministry Rolls Out July KCSE Retake Exams.
Students who miss the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or wish to repeat it now have a chance to retake the exams mid-year.
The Ministry of Education has announced that starting this July, mid-year examinations will be administered to provide an alternative for students who miss one or more papers due to unavoidable circumstances.
The Ministry explained that the mid-year examinations aim to support candidates whose results are compromised due to illness, emergencies, or incomplete papers.
These exams also provide an opportunity for adults who wish to sit for the KCSE. According to CS Ogamba, the initiative will address cases where students miss or fail papers, ensuring they can proceed with their academic or career plans without waiting an entire year.
Benefits and Scope of the Retake Program
CS Ogamba emphasized that the mid-year exams would prevent affected students from repeating a full academic year and allow them to join universities and colleges on time.
He noted that students often face challenges such as illness or emergencies during exams, which can jeopardize their overall results. The new intervention will give them a second chance to correct such setbacks.
The program will also be open to adults and other individuals who failed their exams and wish to retake them. It accommodates both those who did not achieve satisfactory results and those who missed certain papers entirely.

CS Ogamba made the announcement while visiting Cardinal Otunga High School on January 10 to inspect damage caused by a dormitory fire. During the visit, he assured the school that the Ministry would provide the necessary resources for reconstruction.
This inspection highlighted the Ministry’s broader commitment to addressing student challenges, including exam-related issues.
Transition to CBC and Phasing Out of KCSE
As Kenya transitions to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), KCSE examinations are set to be phased out by 2027.
Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CEO Dr. David Njengere reminded students to seize the opportunity to retake exams before the KCSE system is entirely replaced. He urged individuals planning to repeat the exams to act promptly while the system remains in place.
The introduction of mid-year exams marks a significant step by the Ministry of Education to address long-standing challenges faced by students during the KCSE. With the phasing out of KCSE in sight, students and adult learners alike are encouraged to utilize this timely opportunity for academic progression.
