Five Renowned Schools Whose 2024 KCSE Results Have Been Withheld.
Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba presented the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results on Thursday, January 9, 2024, at Mtihani House. Ogamba disclosed that 962,512 candidates had participated in the exams, but the results of 2,899 students were withheld due to suspected malpractice.
Additionally, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) confirmed that the results of 840 students were nullified after proven cases of cheating. Investigations into the withheld results are ongoing and are expected to conclude within 30 days.
Several prominent schools were among those affected by the withholding of results, causing widespread concern among students, parents, and other stakeholders in the education sector.
Lugulu Girls’ High School, Bungoma County
Lugulu Girls’ High School, known for its academic success and a mean grade of 9.328 in the 2023 KCSE exams, is under investigation.
Principal Dinah Cheruiyot assured parents and students that the matter was being addressed through official KNEC appeal channels. She explained in a letter to parents that efforts were ongoing to resolve the issue and that results would be shared as soon as possible.
St. Peter’s Abwao Secondary School, Migori County
St. Peter’s Abwao Secondary School, the top-performing institution in Nyanza during the 2023 KCSE exams, was also implicated. The school’s 2024 results were excluded from the announcement due to suspected examination irregularities.
Mama Malia Academy, Kitui County
Mama Malia Academy, a private school operated by the Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation in Tseikuru, Kitui County, is another affected institution. All 92 of its candidates are awaiting their results as KNEC continues investigations into the irregularities.
Kipsingei Mixed Secondary School, Bomet County
In Bomet County, Kipsingei Mixed Secondary School had its results withheld. Preliminary results accessed by media indicated that all subjects for the school were flagged with the grade ‘W,’ signifying irregularities.
Katilu Boys High School, Turkana County
Katilu Boys High School, ranked as Turkana County’s top-performing school in the 2023 KCSE, also had its 2024 results withheld. KNEC cited suspected examination malpractice as the reason for the ongoing investigation.
Broader Implications and Concerns
The withholding of results has sparked anxiety among affected students and their families, particularly as many of the institutions involved have a history of strong academic performance.
Education stakeholders have emphasized the need for a transparent and timely investigation process to ensure fairness and accountability. This incident highlights persistent challenges in safeguarding the integrity of national examinations, even as the government prioritizes reforms in the education sector.
