Former School Principal of Bunyore Girls, Lugulu Dies

Priscilla Were, a highly skilled administrator and former Principal of Bunyore and Lugulu high schools, has passed away.

She began her education at St Annes Kisoko High School in Nambale Sub-County and later earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from the University of Nairobi, marking the formal start of her teaching career.

In September 1973, Priscilla’s administrative talents were recognized with her appointment as Deputy Head Mistress of Butere Girls High School in the then Western Province.

Her career advanced significantly in January 1974 when she was promoted to head Bunyore Girls High, a position she held until April 1992.

She then moved to Lugulu Girls High in May 1992, serving as Principal for 12 years and eight months until her retirement in December 2004.

Following her retirement, she continued to contribute to education as a Commissioner with the Teachers Service Commission.

Reflecting on her influence, a former student recalled encountering Priscilla at Lugulu Girls in 2002. The student’s brother, Peter Ouma Obwogo, had brought them there for academic benchmarking.

The student noted Priscilla’s strictness, principles, and authoritative nature, which ensured discipline, time management, and academic excellence during her tenure.

Lugulu Girls High maintained outstanding academic performance under her leadership.

Bunyore Girls High has a rich history, established by the Cramers Missionaries from South Africa in 1905 as a commercial training center.

The curriculum initially included Religion, Arithmetic, English, Vernacular, and Needlework, alongside communal living and teaching Sunday school in nearby villages.

By 1944, it had evolved into a full primary and intermediate school, initially including a boys’ section until the boys were relocated to Kima Primary School in 1952.

Notable alumni from Bunyore Girls High include Alice Amwomo Wako, who is the mother of former Busia senator and former attorney-general Amos Wako.

Alice developed a passion for teaching and later taught at the school alongside her husband, Daniel Wako.
