Four Moi University Officials Summoned by EACC Over Alleged Fraud.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has summoned four members of Moi University Council to provide statements concerning the alleged misappropriation of Ksh.2.2 billion through various infrastructural projects.
Those invited include council chair Dr. Humphrey Njuguna, council member Professor Clara Samiji, Education Ministry representative Charles Obiero, and Treasury Representative Isaac Memusi.
EACC stated that the officials are required to furnish details about 11 specific projects at the university. Among these is the proposed construction of the School of Public Health, Dentistry, and Nursing, estimated at Ksh.726 million.
Additionally, the scope covers other construction works such as electrical installations valued at Ksh.148 million and plumbing and drainage systems.
Another significant project under scrutiny is the construction of Library Phase II at the Annex campus, budgeted at Ksh.1.1 billion.
This figure excludes Ksh.169 million for electrical installations and Ksh.35 million allocated for air conditioning. The university also contracted consultancy services to oversee the completion of Library Phase II and the School of Public Health.
Summons to Record Statements
The commission directed the university to facilitate the council members’ attendance at the EACC Eldoret office for interviews and statement recording.
It disclosed that 59 individuals from the university, including Vice-Chancellor Professor Isaac Kosgei, are subjects of interest in the investigation. Kosgei has already provided his statement regarding the allegations.
Moi University continues to grapple with financial constraints, which have led to temporary closures and staff industrial actions.
Despite these hurdles, the University Council has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the challenges.
The council announced that it is engaging key stakeholders to restore stability to the institution. It expressed optimism that with sustained government support and the implementation of strategic measures, the university would regain its footing and emerge more resilient.
