Gatundu Medical Intern Found Dead: Suicide Note and 36-Hour Shift.
Police in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of Dr. Desree Moraa Obwogi, a medical intern, who allegedly died by suicide on Sunday, September 22, 2024.
Dr. Moraa’s body was found hanging from the balcony of a house she shared with a friend, located just a short distance from Gatundu Level 5 Hospital, where she had been working as an intern.
She had only been at the facility for four weeks after transferring from Nakuru Level 5 Hospital. On the day of her death, she left the hospital following a grueling 36-hour shift and was not seen again.

Investigation and Circumstances
Police have yet to clarify the events leading up to the incident, but a suicide note, obtained by Citizen TV, indicated that Dr. Moraa was experiencing distress, possibly linked to challenges in her work environment.
Gatundu South OCPD, Stella Cherono, stated that a report was filed about a suicide involving a 27-year-old woman.
Reactions from Medical Union
In the wake of the tragedy, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) called for improved conditions for medical interns.
Union leaders in Kiambu County expressed concerns over long working hours, stressful conditions, and a shortage of doctors, which they claim have resulted in the loss of lives among interns.
KMPDU Central Kenya Chairman, Maina Githinji, emphasized that the situation was not isolated, stating that interns had faced challenges before, with tragic consequences.
KMPDU’s Call for Action
In a statement on Tuesday, KMPDU Secretary General, Dr. Davji Atellah, stressed the need for a healthcare system that prioritizes the mental health of workers and ensures fair compensation.
He argued that the current system had failed Dr. Moraa and others, describing it as hazardous and likely to continue causing harm if not addressed.
