Gichugu MP Calls for NG-CDF to Be Anchored in Constitution.

Gichugu Member of Parliament, Gichimu Githinji, has underscored the importance of the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), saying the time has come to enshrine it in the Constitution.

He noted that MPs have already drafted a bill aiming to entrench NG-CDF into the Constitution and plan to commence public participation forums across the country starting next week to gather citizens’ input.

While speaking in Gichugu Constituency, Kirinyaga County, during the disbursement of NG-CDF bursaries, Gichimu urged residents to actively take part in the upcoming public participation sessions, which will begin at the Ward level.

He stated that if the bill is enacted, the NG-CDF will be constitutionally protected, ensuring its continued role in funding bursaries and supporting development initiatives across the nation.

During the event, the legislator distributed bursary cheques totaling Sh63 million, targeting over 12,000 students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centers.

He emphasized the need for youth to consider enrolling in TVET institutions, highlighting the availability of modern training equipment. He revealed that his office collaborates closely with the principal of Gichugu TVET to ensure that young people in the constituency gain relevant technical skills and knowledge.

Gichimu added that those with practical skills but lacking formal certification should visit the school administration for guidance on how to obtain certificates in their specific trades.

He appealed to school principals to accommodate students with fee arrears and avoid sending them home, arguing that most parents were aware of their obligations and were making efforts to settle the balances.

Local voices also lent strong support to the NG-CDF. Dominic Mugo, a resident and founder of the Angaza Talent Network, remarked that the fund has significantly benefited Kenyans since its establishment. He mentioned that in Gichugu Constituency, particularly in Karumandii Ward, projects like a social hall and an ICT hub funded by the NG-CDF are underway and will greatly serve the youth once completed.

Mary Muthoni, another local beneficiary, shared similar sentiments. She emphasized the need for NG-CDF to remain in place to ensure continued assistance to needy students and the implementation of development projects.

“Many families in Gichugu can afford education for their children because of these bursaries,” Muthoni said. “We’ve seen visible development and empowerment in our communities because of this fund,” added Mugo.
