Universities Licensed for Bachelor’s Programs

The Council confirmed that the University of Nairobi (UON), Kenyatta University, and Strathmore University were granted licenses to offer Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programs.

These licenses will remain valid until December 2025, September 2028, and November 2027, respectively.

Additionally, Africa Nazarene University and Moi University were issued licenses expiring in December 2025, while Egerton University’s license will extend until June 2026.

Daystar University (Athi River campus), University of Embu, Kisii University, and Mount Kenya University (Parklands campus) also secured approvals.

These institutions’ licenses will remain valid until April 2029. Mount Kenya University received a separate license to provide legal education at the Master’s level, valid until March 2026.

Institutions Offering Both Bachelor’s and Master’s Programs

Maseno University, South Eastern University of Kenya, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Law School were also included in the list.

While Maseno and South Eastern’s licenses are valid until November 2027, JKUAT’s approval extends to June 2028. JKUAT has additionally been licensed to offer a Master’s in Law program.

Institutions Approved Across All Levels

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) and Riara University Law School received licenses valid until November 2027 and September 2028, respectively.

CUEA also earned approval to provide Master’s-level legal education, with its license expiring in September 2028.

Notably, Mount Kenya University and CUEA are the only universities licensed to offer legal education at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Diploma levels.

Diploma-Level Legal Education

Mount Kenya University, Kisii University, and CUEA have been licensed to provide diploma-level legal education.

These licenses are valid until April 2029 for Mount Kenya University and Kisii University, and November 2027 for CUEA.

The Kenya School of Law also retained its license for its Para Legal Studies diploma program. This initiative aims to address gaps within the legal profession and will remain valid until April 2029.

Pending Licensing and Renewals

Some institutions are still awaiting approvals or license renewals. Kenyatta University has applied for a new license to offer a Master’s in Law program, while Strathmore University awaits the renewal of its Master of Laws (LL.M) license. The Council is conducting inspections to finalize these applications.

This latest development underscores the Council of Legal Education’s commitment to ensuring quality legal education in Kenya.
