Government Directs Registration of All School-Going Children Under SHA Program; Deadline.

In a move aimed at ensuring universal health coverage for all Kenyans, the Ministry of Education has directed parents and guardians to register school-going children under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The initiative is in line with the Social Health Insurance Act No. 16 of 2023, which mandates that every Kenyan, including children, must be enrolled in the scheme.

The directive, issued through the State Department for Basic Education, emphasizes the constitutional right of every citizen to the highest attainable standard of health, including access to healthcare services.

The registration process can be completed online via the official website https://afyangu.go.ke or by dialing (*147#) and following the instructions provided.

Ministry Calls for Urgent Compliance

County and Sub-County Directors of Education have been instructed to disseminate this information to all schools within their jurisdictions.

Schools are expected to promptly inform parents and guardians about the registration requirement and provide any necessary guidance to ensure a smooth process.

Belio R. Kipsang, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education, underscored the urgency of compliance, stating that the registration process must be completed by February 28, 2025. He urged education officials to take proactive measures in ensuring all eligible learners are enrolled within the stipulated timeline.

The Social Health Insurance Act was enacted to replace the previous National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) system, with the aim of expanding healthcare access to all Kenyans.

The SHA registration drive is expected to improve access to essential health services, particularly for children, ensuring they receive the medical attention they require.

Educational institutions are expected to play a critical role in facilitating the registration process, working closely with parents to guarantee compliance with the directive. Failure to register learners within the given timeframe could lead to challenges in accessing healthcare services under the new scheme.

With the deadline fast approaching, the Ministry has urged all stakeholders to act swiftly to meet the February 28, 2025, deadline and ensure all school-going children benefit from the new health insurance system.
