Government Embarks on Boarding School Security Assessments Across Kenya.
The Kenya government is currently evaluating safety and security protocols in all 198 boarding primary schools across the Western region.
This comprehensive exercise is aimed at ensuring the safety and welfare of learners, according to the Regional Director of Education, Jared Obiero.
Mr. Obiero emphasized that the government is dedicated to improving the safety and overall well-being of students in the region.
Speaking on Wednesday, he explained that a team, which includes Quality Assurance and Standards Officers (QASO), is conducting the assessments.
The team is focused on both safety and health standards to ensure schools meet the requirements set out in the Ministry of Education’s safety standards manual.
Focus on Primary Schools
The assessment is currently targeting both public and private boarding primary schools. After completing the evaluation in primary schools, the exercise will extend to secondary schools within the region.
The four counties involved in this initiative are Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga, and Bungoma.

In Kakamega County, 70 boarding primary schools, comprising 36 public and 34 private institutions, are part of the assessment.
Bungoma County has 63 schools under review, while Busia County includes 46 schools. Vihiga County, the smallest in the region, has 19 schools undergoing evaluation.
Response to Previous Incidents
This initiative to strengthen safety in boarding schools follows a tragic fire incident at Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County, where 21 boys lost their lives.
