Government Targets 1 Million TVET Enrollments by Year-End.
Efforts are in progress to significantly increase student intake at Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions to meet the growing demand for technical skills. Currently, TVETs conduct admissions in January, April, and September.
However, the Mount Kenya West Regional Director for TVETs, Charles Nyota, has revealed plans to review the admission schedule to accommodate more students.
Nyota explained that the primary goal is to double the number of trainees from 500,000 to one million by the end of the year. This expansion will primarily target students from the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) cohort who may not meet university admission criteria.
The director highlighted that the increased enrollment will optimize the use of government-provided resources and reduce youth idleness by equipping them with employable skills.
Entry Requirements:
Course Type | Minimum Grade Required |
---|---|
Diploma | C- |
Craft Certificate | D plain |
Artisan Certificate | E |
The number of KCSE graduates qualifying for TVETs this year has risen to 605,774 from 526,222 last year, indicating growing interest in technical education.
Funding and Financial Support
Nyota assured that despite the suspension of the new University Funding Model by the courts in December, the Ministry of Education will continue to provide capitation for TVET students.
Under the reverted funding system, the government allocates Sh30,000 per student, leaving parents to cover the remaining Sh26,240.
Nyota encouraged students to take advantage of the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) facility, which will be available by June. He emphasized that this financial support would help many students access affordable education.
The dual training model, which integrates theoretical learning with practical industry experience, remains a key focus. Nyota stated that the State Department is collaborating with the private sector to provide students with industrial attachments and hands-on training as part of their coursework.
Benefits of Dual Training:
- Access to real-world industry practices.
- Enhanced employability through practical skills development.
Nyota also highlighted partnerships with the Ministry of Labour to connect graduates with job opportunities, including overseas placements.

Post-Graduation Opportunities
The department is actively working to ensure graduates secure employment. Nyota shared that since late last year, collaborations with the Ministry of Labour have facilitated linkages for overseas job recruitment. Graduates are encouraged to participate in these opportunities to enhance their career prospects.
Nyota reaffirmed the department’s commitment to transforming TVET institutions into hubs of excellence, stating that they aim not only to train but also to empower graduates with meaningful job opportunities.
This comprehensive approach underscores the government’s commitment to advancing technical education and addressing unemployment among the youth.
