Government Unprepared for CBC Transition to Grade 9, Says Expert.

Governance expert, Kevin Osido, has criticized the government’s lack of preparedness for the upcoming transition to Grade 9 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

He expressed concern that too much attention has been given to political matters, such as the impeachment of the Deputy President, diverting focus from crucial education issues that require urgent attention.

Osido pointed out that schools, especially in some regions, face an acute shortage of teachers, particularly in science subjects.

Additionally, the infrastructure needed to accommodate learners is inadequate, which could lead to challenges during the transition.

He emphasized that the debate on whether Grade 9 should be domiciled in primary or high schools has created confusion, especially with schools closing and students at home for the next two months.

Government Prioritization

Osido criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration for not paying enough attention to education issues, especially given the fires in various institutions and the lack of sufficient investment.

“The Kenya Kwanza government is not paying attention to education matters, and the sector is in total mess. The government should have been prepared for the transition from CBC to Grade 9; however, we are facing a shortage of teachers.” said Osido.

He argued that the government has not been serious in addressing these challenges, despite ongoing discussions among stakeholders about the preparedness for the Grade 9 transition.

He stressed that the government should have anticipated the challenges with the CBC transition and taken urgent steps to address them.

According to Osido, the shortage of teachers and inadequate infrastructure are issues that the government was already aware of but failed to address in time. He called for deeper conversations with stakeholders on how to ensure a smooth transition.

Osido concluded by highlighting that while the Ministry of Education recently launched new books, the focus should have been on comprehensive discussions with stakeholders about preparing for the transition to Grade 9.

He urged the government to prioritize education reforms to ensure a quality education system that benefits all learners.
