Governor Wamatangi Opens 109 New ECDE Centres , 130 More Under Construction

Kiambu County recently saw a significant milestone in education as Governor Kimani Wamatangi inaugurated 109 newly built Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres.

The launch, held at Gitiha ECDE Centre in Githiga Ward, Githunguri Sub-County, marks a new chapter in the county’s commitment to early childhood education.

In addition to these newly opened centres, the county has commenced construction on 130 more, further expanding access to quality education.

Governor Wamatangi noted that the newly constructed ECDE centres signify a revitalization of a long-overlooked sector that has faced years of neglect and insufficient funding.

Each centre features two classrooms (PP1 and PP2), administrative offices, separate restrooms for teachers and students, and well-furnished play areas.

“These new ECDE centres, which are billed as centres of excellence, have PP1 and PP2 classrooms, separate ablution blocks for pupils and teachers, an administration office, and a well-equipped play area” said Wamatangi.

The Governor underscored the intention for these centres to offer infrastructure and quality that are on par with private academies.

The Importance of Early Childhood Education

The Governor emphasized the role of early childhood education in influencing lifelong learning, highlighting its importance as supported by research.

He explained that upgrading the ECDE centres had been prioritized to ensure that young learners experience an encouraging and stimulating environment.

Besides constructing new model centres, renovations of existing centres are ongoing to make certain all students have access to comparable facilities, irrespective of whether they attend public or private kindergartens.

Currently, the project is in its second phase, with the aim of completing an additional 138 centres by December.

The phased approach seeks to systematically improve educational infrastructure across the county, thereby elevating the standard of early childhood education.

Comprehensive Feeding Programme for Better Learning Outcomes

Governor Wamatangi’s initiatives extend beyond infrastructure improvements to include a comprehensive feeding programme aimed at increasing school attendance and enhancing learning outcomes.

To support this, children are provided with a daily serving of nutritious porridge, as well as eggs three times a week and milk.

This initiative has already led to a surge in enrolment numbers, rising from 32,000 to over 39,000 learners.
