Govt Releases Ksh14 Billion Capitation After Schools Fired Staff.

The Government, through spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, announced the release of an additional Ksh14 billion in capitation funds following a public outcry from school principals over delayed disbursements.

Mwaura confirmed that the funds, released on Wednesday, January 29, would be transferred to school accounts on Thursday, January 30, with KCB account holders gaining access the same day and other schools by Friday.

In his statement, Mwaura noted that this recent allocation comes on the heels of Ksh19 billion disbursed last week, bringing the total funds released to schools so far to Ksh33 billion for this term. He assured school administrators that the remaining Ksh15 billion would be distributed soon to cater to Primary, Junior, and Senior Secondary Schools.

Principals’ Concerns Over Delayed Payments

This announcement follows mounting frustrations expressed by principals under the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET). On Tuesday, KUPPET Nakuru Chapter Chairperson Simon Waita highlighted that the National Treasury had missed its January 14 deadline, leaving Ksh28 billion in arrears for the current term.

Waita also revealed that an additional Ksh7,000 per student in day schools remained unpaid from the previous term, exacerbating the financial strain on schools. He stated that this shortfall had forced principals to redirect parental contributions intended for other projects or personally cover expenses to keep schools operational.

In some instances, the financial crisis compelled principals to fire support staff or face lawsuits due to prolonged non-payment of vendors. Waita emphasized that the ongoing delays had placed immense pressure on school administrators, with some schools struggling to maintain basic operations.

While acknowledging these challenges, the government’s commitment to resolving the funding crisis was reiterated in Mwaura’s statement. He pledged that the outstanding Ksh15 billion would be released promptly, aiming to alleviate the financial difficulties faced by schools across the country.
