Gov’t to Extend School Opening Dates on Case-By-Case Basis — DP Gachagua
The national government announced on Friday, April 26, that it will extend school opening dates on an individual basis.
During a news briefing on the continuing floods in Karen, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stated that the Ministry of Education would work with various county governments to assess the situation on the ground before advising parents and students on the changes.
He also advised students whose schools remained unaffected by the rain to report in accordance with the academic calendar.
He said they would analyze each case individually based on its merit. He further mentioned that if there is a necessity to extend the opening day, they can do so. Otherwise, the school will open as planned, to the country’s benefit.
Meanwhile, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang stated that the Ministry has already begun to assess the situation in Nairobi County.
He specifically intimated that 64 schools in Nairobi County will have their opening dates rescheduled due to the demolition of classrooms and restrooms.

Nevertheless, he declared that the unaffected institutions’ school opening dates would not change.
Kipsang stated that 64 schools in Nairobi County are experiencing significant disruptions to their classes and dormitories. To avoid issuing a blanket directive for all schools not to open, the Ministry of Education decided to handle these issues as local matters.

Kipsang further explained that Nairobi has a total of 210 public schools and 800 private schools. The opening of the 64 schools mentioned earlier may be delayed.
On Monday, April 29, schools will reopen for the second term.
On the other hand, repairing vital infrastructure for school buses and students is the responsibility of the Ministry of Transport. Among other facilities, roads and bridges have suffered damage.
