Grade 10 Curriculum: KICD’s 40 Subject Options
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has announced a new curriculum for Grade 10, the first level in Senior Secondary School (SSS), which will commence in 2026.
This curriculum introduces 40 subjects, from which students will select seven, aligning with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) shift from the 8-4-4 system.
Compulsory and Elective Subjects
Students will select subjects based on their intended career paths, with four compulsory subjects for all:
- English
- Kiswahili
- Community Service Learning
- Physical Education (PE)

In addition to these, learners will choose three subjects based on their selected pathway.
Subject Pathways
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
Under the STEM pathway, 17 subjects are available:
- Mathematics Advanced
- Mathematics
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- General Science
- Agriculture
- Computer Studies
- Home Science
- Drawing and Design
- Aviation Technology
- Building and Construction
- Electrical Technology
- Metal Technology
- Power Mechanics
- Wood Technology
- Media Technology
- Marine and Fisheries Technology
Social Sciences
For the social sciences, subjects include:
- Advanced English
- Literature in English
- Indigenous Language
- Kiswahili Kipevu/Kenya Sign Language
- Fasihi ya Kiswahili
- Sign Language
- Arabic
- French
- German
- Mandarin Chinese
- History and Citizenship
- Geography
- Christian Religious Education/Islamic Religious Education/Hindu Religious Education
- Business Studies
Arts and Sports Science
The arts and sports science pathway includes:
- Sports and Recreation
- Physical Education
- Music and Dance
- Theatre and Film
- Fine Arts
Specializations and Pathways
Learners who specialize in English or Kiswahili will follow a differentiated curriculum, taking Advanced English or Kiswahili Kipevu with additional lessons.

It is recommended that at least two subjects be chosen from the learner’s selected pathway, although exceptions allow for some flexibility with guidance from school principals.
