Grade 2 Pupil Swept Away by Floodwaters on His Way Home from School.
A Grade 2 pupil lost his life on Wednesday evening after being swept away by floods in Milimani, Nakuru County. The city experienced a heavy downpour that led to severe flooding across multiple areas, turning normal streets into hazardous water channels.
According to police and the bereaved family, 8-year-old Glen Karanja was returning home from Lenana Primary School when he tragically slipped into a roadside drainage trench. The open trench had transformed into a powerful stream due to the intensity of the rain.
Glen’s mother, Priscilla Karanja, recalled that her third-born son had left school at 3:30pm, as he always did. However, this ordinary school day took a horrifying turn. She said she received a call informing her that her child had been caught in the rain and later swept away by floodwaters. She later learned that her son had been found lifeless, a short distance from where he fell.
Glen’s aunt, Miriam Karanja, narrated how other children tried to pull him out but were overpowered by the strong current. She said they watched helplessly as he was carried away by the rushing water, never imagining that the situation would escalate to such a tragedy.

Police officers from Nakuru West acted swiftly after receiving the report. They managed to retrieve Glen’s body and transported it to the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue. The authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the unsafe drainage systems that contributed to the boy’s death.
“I was called and told my son had been rained on badly… they later said he was taken by the floods and found lifeless,” said Priscilla. Miriam also expressed deep sorrow, stating that they never imagined things would take such a dreadful turn.
