The speaker of the National Assembly, stated that the reforms are intended to enhance the quality of education and that all universities will receive support during their implementation.
During the 23rd graduation ceremony of Mt Kenya University in Thika, Wetang’ula stated that the government had adequate resources to support all universities, particularly in the areas of research and innovation, employment of educators, science, and technology, among others.
He stated that the government will continue to finance both public and private universities in order to enhance the quality of education and produce marketable students.
The Presidential Working Group on Education Reforms recommended the education reforms, which seek to reform the sector.
At the same time, the Speaker of the National Assembly urged graduates to Explore Global Employment Opportunities, stating that the local opportunities were insufficient for the thousands of graduates who leave our universities each year.
He stated that the country had invested significantly in human capital and continues to produce globally employable students.
Kenyans have the aptitude to adapt to any environment. In every country I have visited, there are Kenyans who are employed successfully. Therefore, cease crying, obtain a visa, and look for work abroad,’ Wetangula said.
Prof. Simon Gicharu, chairman of the university, announced that the university would waive fees arrears totaling Sh80 million for over 4,000 students so that they could receive their academic certificates.
Gicharu stated that the action was taken to reduce the number of pupils suffering from depression as a result of their inability to obtain employment due to the lack of certificates.
Gicharu announced that all former students can now obtain their diplomas for free.
During the ceremony, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Karim Khan received an honorary Doctor of Law degree.
Dr. Khan praised the importance of education to the progress and evolution of humanity.
He continued by urging everyone to dedicate themselves tirelessly to ensuring that education is both accessible and affordable.
