Grief Strikes Village After Pupil Found Dead in School Latrine.
A sombre atmosphere filled a family in Kerusoi North Sub-County, Nakuru County, on Monday after the body of an eight-year-old boy was discovered in an open, abandoned pit latrine at Mau Summit Primary School.
Samuel Mwangi, a grade one pupil, had been missing for six days before his body was found inside the latrine.
He disappeared on October 13 after going with his friends to attend a Sunday service at St Paul’s Catholic Church.
His family, alarmed by his absence, quickly reported the case to the local chief, who then notified police officers at Mau-Summit Police Station.
Search Efforts and Family’s Struggles
A frantic search for Samuel began, but despite their efforts, the family could not locate him.
They searched throughout the village, including the church, but were informed that the boy was never seen on the church compound. In desperation, the family began circulating photos of Samuel online, hoping for leads.

However, their efforts were hindered by scammers who tried to deceive them. One individual falsely claimed Samuel had been abducted, but this information was proven untrue, leaving the family devastated.
Six days after the disappearance, Samuel’s body was found in the open school pit latrine. The discovery left the community, including the boy’s family, questioning the circumstances surrounding his death.
Samuel’s mother expressed anger, blaming the school administration for negligence, as they had not cordoned off the abandoned latrine. She believed her son’s death could have been avoided if the pit had been covered.
The mother highlighted that the pit latrine, already in disuse, posed a threat to other students and could potentially become a danger zone for more children.
Samuel’s family demanded accountability from the school, emphasizing that the death was preventable.
Similar Incidents Across Schools
The incident in Nakuru adds to a series of school-related fatalities reported across the country.
A similar tragedy occurred on September 17 when a form three student at Friends School Kamusinga in Kakamega County was found dead in a septic tank. In this case, the student fell into the tank and was rushed to Kimilili Sub-County Hospital but did not survive.
