Health Ministry Issues New Mpox Guidelines to Schools.

In light of rising Mpox cases in the country, schools have been urged to adopt stringent health measures.

Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki outlined six key recommendations aimed at safeguarding students’ well-being. School administrators are expected to adhere strictly to these guidelines to curb the spread of the disease.

The Ministry of Health has emphasized the importance of hand hygiene, recommending frequent hand washing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based sanitizers. These practices should be observed especially after physical activities or contact with surfaces.

Schools are required to implement routine cleaning and disinfection protocols. Classrooms, staff rooms, bathrooms, and other common areas should be regularly sanitized to minimize the risk of infection.

Early Detection and Referral

To bolster early detection, teachers and school staff will undergo training to identify Mpox symptoms such as fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue. Suspected cases should be referred to healthcare facilities for testing and excluded from school until medically cleared.

While physical distancing is no longer mandatory, schools are encouraged to ensure well-ventilated classrooms and avoid overcrowding in any area. Events such as assemblies and sports gatherings must comply with existing health guidelines.

To enhance response efforts, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with county governments and partners, has strengthened disease surveillance. Cases have been reported in 12 counties:

The Health Principal Secretary stressed the importance of adhering to these public health measures to mitigate the outbreak’s impact.

With rising cases, proactive measures are critical to protecting school communities and curbing the spread of Mpox.
