How KUCCPS Determines Placement and Cut-Off Points.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) is a government agency responsible for coordinating student placements in universities, teacher training colleges, national polytechnics, and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutes.
Additionally, it formulates career guidance programs for students, maintains student placement data, and provides advisory services to the government on student placements.
How KUCCPS Determines Placement and Cut-Off Points.
Merit-Based Student Placement Process
KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer, Agnes Wahome, explained the criteria used for student placement, emphasizing that merit is the primary factor. Speaking at the 2nd Biennial University Funding Conference, held from February 26 to 27, she elaborated on how the placement system operates.
She highlighted that KUCCPS utilizes a computer system that processes examination results received from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC). This system ranks students based on the programmes they have chosen, ensuring a merit-based selection process. Once students are ranked, the last admitted student to a specific programme determines the cut-off points for that course.
Determination of Cut-Off Points
Wahome clarified that KUCCPS does not set the cut-off points; rather, they are dictated by the number of students applying for a particular programme. The ranking system determines the threshold, ensuring that only the most qualified applicants gain admission.
She stressed that the placement process is entirely dependent on the demand for each course. If more students apply for a specific programme, the cut-off points naturally rise, making competition a key factor in determining admission.
Wide Range of Institutions Covered
The KUCCPS CEO disclosed that the agency assigns students to more than 400 institutions, including 70 universities, 90 Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTC), and over 300 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. Additionally, the placement service extends to teacher training colleges, with 35 public institutions currently part of the system.
She acknowledged that there is growing demand to expand placements to private teacher training colleges and private TVET institutions. The inclusion of these institutions would increase accessibility for students seeking higher education and technical training opportunities.
Advanced Placement Platform
Wahome also emphasized the capabilities of the KUCCPS platform, noting that it has been internally developed by Kenyan professionals. The system is designed to accommodate as many institutions as necessary and allows institutions to verify that admitted students meet the required academic qualifications.
By utilizing this platform, KUCCPS ensures an efficient and transparent placement process, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to merit-based student placement while addressing the evolving demands of higher education institutions in Kenya.
How is KUCCPs placement confirmed?
To check or confirm KUCCPS Placement Status, students must log into the KUCCPS portal by visiting http://students.kuccps.net. Upon clicking the login link, students are required to enter their KCSE index number, select the exam year, and input their password.
The password can either be their birth certificate number or the KCPE index number used during KCSE registration.
Once logged in, students will be able to view the institution where they have been placed along with the specific course they have been admitted to.

Distinction Between Cut-off Points and Weighted Cluster Points
Weighted cluster points represent a candidate’s performance in four required subjects relative to the top candidates in the same KCSE examination year.
These points are calculated based on subject cluster requirements and overall performance and are rounded to three decimal places to minimize ties. In contrast, cut-off points refer to the weighted cluster points of the last student competitively placed in a particular degree program.
KUCCPS FAQs
Understanding Weighted Cluster Points
Candidates are discouraged from attempting to compute their own weighted cluster points, as this would lead to inaccuracies. Instead, students should access their pre-calculated weighted cluster points directly from their KUCCPS portal.
KUCCPS determines the cluster points through an automated system, utilizing KCSE examination performance data provided by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC). Since individual performance indices (PI) are not disclosed to secondary school graduates, they are unable to calculate their own weighted cluster points.
Universities and Colleges Eligible for Placement
A comprehensive list of institutions participating in KUCCPS student placement can be accessed through the Student’s Portal at students.kuccps.net.
Placement Eligibility for Non-Kenyan Citizens
At present, non-Kenyan citizens can only apply for placement in the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education and Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education programmes.
Understanding Revision of Choices
The revision of choices refers to the process in which students who initially applied for courses through the KUCCPS portal but were not selected get an opportunity to apply for alternative courses at different institutions.
Number of Courses One Can Apply For
Applicants are allowed to submit up to six choices for degree courses. For diploma, certificate, and artisan programmes, they may apply for a maximum of four courses.
Notification of Application Openings
KUCCPS announces the commencement of placement applications through both print and electronic media to ensure candidates are well informed.
Application Fee
The application fee is set at Ksh 1,500. In case of a revision of choices, the same transaction code used for the initial application is applicable.
Reversing Wrong Payments
Applicants who make erroneous payments can request a reversal by providing the necessary transaction details. The process of refunding may take up to seven days.
Checking Placement Status
Students can verify their placement details through the Student’s Portal. Additionally, they receive an SMS notification sent to the contact number they provided during the application process.
Upgrading from Certificate or Diploma to the Next Level
At this time, KUCCPS does not facilitate placement for students who have completed certificate or diploma courses under government sponsorship and wish to advance to the next level.
Eligibility of Past KCSE Candidates for Placement
Candidates from previous years who were not placed during their time are only permitted to apply for certificate or diploma programmes available at TVET institutions and Open University.
