How Much JSS Intern Teachers Will Earn After TSC Confirmation
In the upcoming financial year 2024-2025, the education sector has received a substantial budget allocation of 656.6 billion Shillings.
Notably, the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has been allocated 38.2 billion Shillings, with a significant portion aimed at hiring junior secondary school (JSS) teachers.
The National Treasury has proposed an additional 13.4 billion Shillings for converting 46,000 JSS intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms.
Junior secondary school teachers, who recently ended a strike demanding better pay and job security, are set to benefit from these changes.
Currently, JSS intern teachers earn a monthly stipend of 20,000 Shillings, taking home 17,000 Shillings after deductions.
Once converted to permanent positions, their starting salary will increase to around 30,000 Shillings, with additional allowances such as house, commuter, leave, and medical insurance benefits.
This will bring their total earnings to about 52,000 Shillings, varying based on location and other factors.
For primary school teachers, the salary is expected to rise to around 26,000 Shillings.
The teachers have urged for a supplementary budget to cover the shortfall and ensure all 46,000 intern teachers are employed on permanent terms.
They emphasize that the court ruling did not differentiate among the interns, making it essential for all to be converted to permanent and pensionable terms.

Meanwhile, there is mounting pressure on the teacher’s employer to reinstate the 742 JSS intern teachers whose contracts were previously terminated.
The overall goal is to ensure that all 46,000 JSS intern teachers are absorbed into permanent positions, fulfilling the government’s promise to improve the education sector and secure better working conditions for teachers.
