Unlike previous years, candidates will not be able to access their KCSE results through SMS codes. This change follows numerous complaints by parents and students over the years. The decision to discontinue the SMS service was announced by the then Education CS Ezekiel Machogu during the 2023 results release. Machogu reassured the public that engineers were engaged to ensure the online system functioned smoothly.
Record Number of Candidates
The 2024 KCSE exams, which began on October 22 and ended on November 22, saw candidates across 10,755 centres nationwide, marking an increase in the number of students compared to the previous year.
Before the release of the results, CS Ogamba presented them to President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi. Ruto expressed satisfaction with the progress in the education sector, noting that improvements in the curriculum, teacher recruitment, and school resources had positively impacted performance across the country.
Efforts to Address Exam Malpractices
In efforts to tackle examination malpractice, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and the Ministry of Education implemented several strict measures.
For the first time, the 2024 KCSE exams featured personalized papers, which included candidates’ names, index numbers, and school details in a pre-printed format. Additionally, CS Ogamba announced the creation of special courts to handle cases of examination malpractice.
Despite these efforts, the exams were marred by claims of irregularities, including cheating and the distribution of counterfeit exam materials.
Reports surfaced of teachers being involved in aiding cheating by leaking exam papers. There were also widespread complaints about poor pay for exam invigilators, exam center managers, and markers.

Earlier Release of KPSEA Results
The release of the KCSE results followed the earlier announcement of the 2024 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) results, fulfilling the Ministry of Education’s commitment to releasing both examination results in early January.
This release marks another step forward in the Ministry’s efforts to improve transparency and accessibility in Kenya’s education system.
