JOOUST to Vet Graduates Before Certificate Issuance Following Degree Fraud Scandal.
The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) has announced plans to audit all 2024 graduates before issuing certificates. This decision follows reports of irregularities in awarding degrees at the institution.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) disclosed on Tuesday, November 26, that approximately 200 students allegedly bribed university officials to bypass supplementary examinations and secure spots on the graduation list.
In response to the allegations, the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emily Akuno, stated that the names of students involved in such malpractice had already been removed from the preliminary graduation list.
To address the issue comprehensively, the university established a special team working alongside EACC officials to thoroughly vet all graduates prior to certificate issuance.

Prof. Akuno emphasized the university’s commitment to transparency, ethical conduct, and good governance in its operations, appealing for public support and patience as the matter is resolved through legal and institutional procedures.
EACC Demands Swift Action
During the launch of investigations in Ugenya sub-county on Tuesday, EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi urged the university to act promptly.
He indicated that the commission expects JOOUST to take administrative measures against those implicated in the scandal while investigations continue.
Ngumbi stressed that if the allegations are confirmed, the matter would pose a significant problem for the institution.

Ngumbi also revealed that the issue is not isolated to JOOUST, as a similar pattern has been identified in at least 18 other universities currently under investigation.
The EACC remains committed to addressing these issues and ensuring accountability across institutions of higher learning.
