JSS Intern Teachers Hold Nationwide Protests, Demands Confirmation and Full Salary Compensation
The Monday’s nationwide protests led by Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers across various counties in Kenya brought attention to pressing issues within the education sector.
Organized by the Kenyan Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) branches, the protests aimed to address grievances related to the employment status and compensation of JSS intern teachers.
In Narok County, a significant turnout marked the demonstration in Narok town on April 29th, 2024.
KUPPET Narok Branch led teachers to demand justice following a recent ruling at the Employment & Labour Relations Court regarding the status of JSS teachers hired as interns by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Mr. Charles Ngeno, the Executive Secretary of KUPPET Narok Branch, reiterated the importance of the demonstration, stating that Article 37 of the Kenyan Constitution guided them.

Similarly, in Elgeyo Marakwet County, JSS teachers joined hands with KUPPET leaders in a peaceful demonstration in Iten town.
Mr. Biwott Paul Kibor, the Executive Secretary of KUPPET Elgeyo Marakwet Branch, emphasized the need for the TSC to address the concerns of JSS intern teachers following the court ruling.
In Nandi County, a protest along the Namgoi-Kapsabet town road saw a strong showing of support from teachers affiliated with KUPPET.
Their demands echoed those of their counterparts across the country, urging permanent and pensionable employment for JSS interns and fair compensation as directed by the court ruling.
Meanwhile, in Nakuru County, junior teachers marched peacefully in Nakuru town, calling upon the TSC to confirm JSS intern teachers on permanent terms and provide due compensation for their service under the internship program.
In Chonyi Sub-County, Kilifi County, JSS intern teachers organized a procession from Kwa Ndara Stage to the office of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chonyi Sub County.
The demonstration, which commenced on April 30, 2024, at 10:00 AM, was conducted in accordance with Article 37 of the Kenyan Constitution.
Led by the JSS intern secretary, Crispus M. Kat, the teachers demanded the immediate confirmation of intern teachers by the TSC, fair compensation for the period of their service, and an end to discriminatory employment terms.
