JSS Interns and Doctors Employment, Ruto Resignation, MPs’ Pay Cuts: Gen Zs Fresh Demands

Over the past week, anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests have gained momentum, with demonstrators using various social media platforms to voice their frustrations with the current government.

Initially, when the Gen Zs took to the streets, their primary objective was to reject the Finance Bill 2024.

The protest quickly evolved into a broader call for government accountability, putting both elected and appointed public servants on notice for their conduct.

After days of sustained pressure, President Ruto reconsidered his stance on the Finance Bill, which would have required Kenyans to pay more to fund government operations.

However, his delayed response allowed other issues to be raised by the citizenry, leading to a list of demands that the protesters want the government to address.

The youths have now issued several demands to the government, including calls for President Ruto’s resignation. The top demands, posted online and labeled “non-negotiable,” include:

  1. The Executive must obey all court orders.
  2. Scrapping the illegal and illegitimate Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) position.
  3. Removing public funding for the Office of the First Lady, Second Lady, and Prime Cabinet Secretary’s Spouse, redirecting those funds to employ teachers and doctors.
  4. Scrapping the housing levy.
  5. Publishing audited records on fund utilization and providing refunds for all contributors.

Additional Demands

Further demands include:

  • Immediate firing of all government officials with criminal records and integrity issues.
  • Constituting the IEBC within 30 days.
  • Employing JSS teachers and intern doctors.
  • Reducing Members of Parliament’s salaries and allowances, capping them at Ksh.200,000.
  • Ensuring MPs do not earn more than doctors.
  • Restoring the school feeding programme.
  • Curbing wastage by requiring all government officials to use government vehicles, trains, and airplanes.

Conclusion

The final and perhaps most significant demand is that the President resigns from office. The protesters are adamant that their demands be addressed to ensure transparency, accountability, and better governance.
