JSS Teacher Charged for Impersonating President Ruto’s Daughter on Social Media.
A Junior Secondary School (JSS) teacher, Samwel Mogwasi Mainga, was presented in court on Thursday afternoon after being charged with impersonating June Ruto, the daughter of President William Ruto, on social media.
Mainga was apprehended on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, in Mombasa County under suspicion of breaching the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act. The arrest occurred while Mainga was attending a sports event, allegedly leaving his students unsupervised. His lawyer, Danstan Omari, stated that the teacher was not present at the school during the incident.
According to an affidavit filed in Milimani Chief Magistrate’s Court, lead investigator P.C. Peter Mwangi confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has requested an additional seven days to gather vital evidence, such as documents from the suspect’s social media accounts and further testimonies from witnesses.
Defense Lawyer’s Response
Mainga’s defense lawyer, Danstan Omari, countered the DCI’s request for extended detention, stating that his client is a registered teacher with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and has a permanent residence, thus posing no flight risk.
Omari emphasized that the forensic analysis of Mainga’s social media accounts and witness statements could continue without his client’s prolonged detention, as it would infringe on Mainga’s constitutional rights.

Investigators have raised concerns that Mainga may attempt to flee, given the uncertainty surrounding his current living situation. This has led them to seek more time to complete their inquiries and ensure all necessary evidence is gathered.
The court is set to decide on the application for the extension of Mainga’s detention on Friday. The investigation continues, with authorities eager to finalize the case and address any legal proceedings promptly.
