Juja MP Koimburi Freed on Ksh.200K Cash Bail in Academic Certificates Forgery Case.

Questions have arisen over why the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has only recently moved to charge Juja MP George Koimburi with forging academic documents, nearly thirty years after the alleged crime took place.

The legislator, who has served in office since 2021, appeared before the Kiambu Law Courts on Wednesday, where he denied six charges of forgery. The court granted him release on a cash bail of Ksh.200,000.

Koimburi faced multiple charges linked to the falsification of academic credentials.

According to the ODPP, the accusations date back to an unspecified time between November and December 1994, when he allegedly forged a Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) certificate, falsely representing it as a genuine Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) document.

Further allegations included the falsification of two additional certificates from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

One was reportedly a certificate of participation in the East African Universities Accession Project, while the other was an academic excellence certificate from the School of Human Resource Development.

Presentation of False Documents

The ODPP stated that Koimburi was accused of presenting these forged certificates as genuine and duly signed documents from KNEC and JKUAT.

The prosecution revealed that he allegedly presented the certificates at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) offices on March 8, 2021, with full knowledge that they were fraudulent.

Upon hearing the charges, the MP denied all six counts of forgery.

Besides the current charges, the court is set to determine on February 20 whether Koimburi will face another count for failing to attend a previous court hearing, as requested by the prosecution.

The ODPP noted that the MP had originally been charged on April 26, 2021, with forging academic documents and was released on a bond of Ksh.100,000. However, after failing to comply with court summons, a warrant for his arrest was issued on September 16, 2021, leading to the forfeiture of his cash bail.
