Kenya Power Responds to Kenyatta University Students’ Protest.

Kenya Power has addressed the recent demonstrations by Kenyatta University students over power supply issues in the Roysambu area.

The protests, which caused significant disruptions along the Thika Superhighway, were sparked by a prolonged blackout affecting hostels and other residential establishments in the Kiwanja area, where many students reside.

In a statement, Kenya Power explained that a 200kVA transformer serving the area failed late last year. To mitigate the outage, the company temporarily installed a larger-capacity 315kVA transformer while sourcing a suitable replacement.

Kenya Power reported that the appropriate 200kVA transformer was dispatched on January 23, 2025, for installation. However, the replacement process was disrupted when locals confronted the maintenance team.

During the altercation, staff members were injured, and their truck was extensively damaged, including a smashed windscreen and punctured wheels. The team was forced to abandon the operation, leaving the area without power.

Kenya Power affirmed its dedication to restoring power to the affected area as quickly as possible. The company emphasized its commitment to ensuring reliable power supply while prioritizing the safety of its staff.

The situation remains tense, with residents and students eager for a resolution. Kenya Power has assured affected customers of its commitment to resolving the issue promptly.
