Kenyan Teachers Allowances Per Job Grade and TSC Scale

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) provides allowances to teachers in two categories: remunerative and reimbursable.

Remunerative allowances are included in the salary structure, whereas reimbursable allowances are refundable upon request.

Remunerative allowances include automatic allowances such as housing allowances, medical allowances, commuter allowances, and hardship allowances.

The TSC house allowance, a popular reward, is paid monthly to all instructors based on established criteria determined by their employment grade and workstation.

The housing allowance rises with the work grade. Teachers working in places with insecurity, high dangers, and severe climates receive monthly hardship allowances.

Similarly, the commuter allowance, which is paid monthly, varies depending on the teacher’s work group.

Furthermore, teachers in Kenya are entitled to an annual leave allowance, the conditions for which change slightly from other benefits due to differences in the teacher’s grade level.

There are five alternatives for allowances paid on request. These are not automatically included in a teacher’s monthly or annual remuneration, but they are available upon request.

The responsibility allowance primarily helps school principals, whereas the special duty allowance targets teachers in administrative positions in dry areas.

Readers’ allowance helps visually impaired instructors hire qualified readers, while interpreters’ allowance helps deaf teachers on study leave.

Special school allowances benefit special needs education professionals, while transfer allowances help instructors who have been relocated by the Commission.

Travel expenditures are compensated under certain conditions, such as interdiction revocation, interview attendance, and initial assignment outside of the home area.

Quota per diem, a daily subsistence stipend for instructors on official assignments, needs applications at least 14 days before departure.
