KEPSHA Calls For More JSS Labs to Boost CBC Success.
The Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) in the western region is urging the government to prioritize the establishment of science laboratories in junior secondary schools.
According to the regional leadership, these facilities are crucial to ensure the effective implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which relies heavily on practical, hands-on learning.
This call to action was emphasized during the annual KEPSHA conference held in Busia, which brought together primary school head teachers from the entire western region. The event provided a platform to evaluate the progress and challenges faced in the ongoing transition to the CBC system.
While addressing the gathering, KEPSHA western regional chairperson Tobias Omusale commended the government for recently recruiting Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers.
He described the employment move as historic and acknowledged it as a significant milestone in supporting the CBC rollout. He emphasized that the success of junior secondary schools hinges on continued investment, particularly in science-related infrastructure.
The message from the regional chair was supported by the national KEPSHA chairman, Ali Fuad. He pointed out that CBC implementation would not succeed without the necessary facilities, notably science labs, in junior schools. Fuad shared that he had personally discussed these issues with the president, who confirmed receiving a relevant letter on the matter.

Fuad also revealed that negotiations had taken place regarding the allocation of funds initially intended for other uses. The discussions resulted in a compromise that led to the promotion of 25,000 teachers, instead of the originally planned 6,000.
This was achieved through the release of Ksh 1 billion and a reallocation of funds, illustrating the government’s willingness to support the teaching fraternity when approached constructively.
