KETHAWA Backs Teachers’ Strike in Hardship Zones
The Kenya Teachers in Hardship and Arid Areas Welfare Association (KETHAWA), representing educators in arid and semi-arid land areas (ASAL) and other challenging regions, has endorsed the recent strike call made by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).
KETHAWA’s National Secretary, Wangonya Wangenye, affirmed that the union is entitled to strike if the government does not fulfill its obligations under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Wangenye criticized the government’s tendency to offer promises without following through, insisting that the Kenya Kwanza administration must adhere to the CBA fully and promptly, without any alterations.
Wangenye emphasized that KETHAWA will actively support the strike until all demands are addressed.

He highlighted the disparity between the wealth flaunted by politicians and the meager resources allocated to teachers, stressing that educators should not have to beg for their rightful entitlements.
Demands for JSS Teachers
In addition, Wangenye called for the immediate permanent and pensionable employment of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers and their inclusion in the current CBA.
He criticized the ongoing delays in confirming JSS teachers and demanded that concrete results be achieved without further promises.
