Kiambu County to Provide Free Learning Materials for ECDE Centers.
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi announced that his administration will provide free learning materials to all 524 county-managed Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers.
This initiative is designed to make ECDE learning in public nursery schools entirely free and is backed by the County ECDE Bill, currently under review in the county assembly.
The governor emphasized the significance of this initiative during the launch of the distribution of free exercise books and other learning materials in Kiambu Town. He described it as part of a 360-degree transformation plan for the county’s ECDE sector.
The transformation plan includes the construction of modern ECDE facilities and the implementation of a comprehensive feeding program.
So far, approximately 250 ECDE centers have been completed, with the remaining 274 expected to be finalized by 2026. These efforts have led to an enrollment boost, with over 40,000 learners currently registered in Kiambu County.
The county’s ECDE centers feature:
- Modernized classrooms
- Administrative offices
- Play areas equipped with swings, tunnels, and sand pits
- Ablution blocks for both teachers and students
The feeding program ensures that all learners receive nutritious meals, including:
- Porridge (uji)
- Boiled eggs three times a week
- Milk every Thursday
In October 2023, Governor Wamatangi inaugurated 109 newly constructed and fully equipped ECDE centers.
Construction of an additional 138 centers, which are nearly 90% complete, continues. These efforts have been instrumental in achieving higher enrollment rates and improving learning conditions across the county.
Free Training for ECDE Teachers
Looking ahead, the governor announced plans in November 2024 to provide free training for ECDE teachers to help them attain the required diploma level.
The training will also equip teachers with essential skills to meet the needs of the current generation of children. This aligns with the county’s broader goals of improving education quality and supporting educators.
Governor Wamatangi reiterated in October 2024 that all ECDE children in Kiambu would receive free nutritious meals in schools. This program not only supports learners’ health but also enhances their concentration and academic performance.
