Kiambu Teachers Unite in Strike Over Shortage of JSS Teachers
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Kiambu County has aligned itself with teachers across the country, declaring they will not return to school until the government meets their demands.
The strike is fueled by ongoing challenges in Junior Secondary School (JSS) classes.
Led by Kiambu County KUPPET Chairperson Rose Kiiru, the union has raised concerns about the severe shortage of teachers in JSS. They emphasized that forcing unqualified educators to teach subjects beyond their areas of expertise undermines the quality of education.

To address this issue, the union proposed relocating JSS classes to high schools, where more teachers and better resources could meet the students’ needs.
Criticism of Contractual Employment
The union has also voiced strong opposition to the employment of teachers on a contractual basis, arguing that it violates the terms of their agreement with the government.
They demanded the permanent employment of 130,000 teachers, emphasizing that they would not return to the classroom until this issue is resolved.

Rose Kiiru warned that the education system, particularly in high schools, will continue to suffer if the government does not fulfill its promises. The teachers remain resolute in their refusal to resume their duties until their grievances receive resolution, thereby jeopardizing the future of education.
