KICD Calls for CBC Books Proposals for Grades 10 to 12.

Publishers have until March 7, 2025, to submit proposals for learning materials under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) for senior secondary education.

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has outlined that these submissions will undergo a detailed evaluation and approval process, expected to conclude by April 2, 2025. This initiative seeks to improve the quality of education for learners in Grades 10 to 12.

The materials requested include textbooks, workbooks, teacher’s guides, and other learning aids designed to support complex concepts, helping students prepare for further education and careers.

Literary texts for Grades 10 to 12 are also required as part of the submissions. KICD’s Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Ong’ondo, stated that the institute has provided comprehensive guidelines for submission, evaluation, and approval on its website.

Prof. Ong’ondo noted that publishers are encouraged to adhere to these outlined requirements and timelines while submitting their proposals. He emphasized that the CBC is intended to remain dynamic and globally competitive to address the demands of the current labour market.

Progress in Curriculum Design

KICD has completed the review of curriculum designs up to Grade 10 in line with recommendations from the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER), chaired by Prof. Raphael Munavu.

These designs are anticipated to receive approval from the KICD Council by late February 2024. Prof. Ong’ondo clarified that the ongoing rationalisation has not compromised the quality of the CBC, stating that critical competencies remain intact and are integrated within the streamlined learning areas.

Efforts have also been made to adapt curriculum designs and materials for Special Needs Education (SNE) learners. KICD has ensured inclusivity by developing resources tailored for students who are Visually Impaired (VI), Physically Impaired (PI), and Hearing Impaired (HI).

This adaptation underscores the institute’s commitment to equitable education for all learners.

During a recent retreat in Mombasa, KICD Council Chairperson Prof. Simon Gicharu highlighted the importance of aligning the curriculum with both local and global job market requirements.

This approach aims to prepare students comprehensively for future opportunities while maintaining relevance to industry needs.
