Kikuyu’s Bursary Programme Transforming Lives.

The bursary programme in Kikuyu Constituency, Kiambu County, continues to serve as a beacon of hope for families, exemplified by the story of Juliet Mumbua, a single mother of three.

The initiative enabled her eldest son to complete his education at Kahuho Boys High School, a milestone she never thought possible.

Grateful for the support, she expressed hope that her Form Two son would also achieve his academic aspirations through the programme.

The 2025 Secondary Schools Bursary Programme concluded on Friday, January 17, 2025, marking a transformative moment for thousands of residents.

Participation surged, with over 3,000 applicants thronging the Kikuyu Ward offices on the final day. Across the constituency’s five wards, the number of applicants showcased the high demand for educational support:

Member of Parliament for Kikuyu Constituency, Kimani Ichung’wah, has overseen the programme’s remarkable success, reporting widespread participation and impactful outcomes.

Substantial Funding Allocation

The National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) Chairman in Kikuyu Constituency, Simon Ngugi, disclosed that Sh47 million had been allocated for bursaries in the 2024/2025 financial year.

Of this amount, Sh23 million was directed towards secondary school students, while the remaining funds supported learners in higher education, technical colleges, and other tertiary institutions.

This year’s allocation reflects a significant rise from the Sh22.7 million disbursed in 2024, underscoring a robust commitment to enhancing access to education and reducing school dropout rates.

In addition to mainstream education, the bursary programme has extended its reach to support short courses aimed at equipping individuals with practical skills.

For instance, boda-boda riders have received funding to cover licensing and professional training, which has improved road safety and professionalism in the transport sector.

Impact on Lives and Communities

By focusing on education and skill development, the programme has transformed individual lives while fostering community progress.

The initiative empowers beneficiaries with opportunities to achieve personal growth and contribute meaningfully to society.

For families like Juliet Mumbua’s, the bursary programme represents hope for a brighter future, ensuring that children can access education and fulfill their potential.

“Without this support, I wouldn’t have managed,” Juliet said with gratitude.
