Kisii University Responds to 16,000 KUCCPS Admissions Controversy
Kisii University has rebutted claims that it admitted a staggering 16,000 students through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) for the upcoming academic year.
Professor Fredrick Wanyama, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, has clarified that the actual intake for 2024 stands at 7,772 students, a decrease compared to the previous year’s figures.
“We did not receive 16,000 students. Last year, our intake was slightly over 8,000 students, so this year’s numbers are lower than last year’s,” explained Professor Wanyama.
Factors Behind Kisii University’s Appeal
Professor Wanyama attributed Kisii University’s growing popularity to its diverse range of degree programs that cater to various academic interests.
“We offer a wide array of degree programs across different disciplines. Students choose us because we provide what they are looking for,” he stated.
He also emphasized the institution’s ongoing improvements and expansion efforts.
Cost of Education at Kisii University
Regarding tuition fees, Professor Wanyama noted that there isn’t a significant disparity between Kisii University and other higher learning institutions in Kenya.
“The difference in tuition fees is negligible. For instance, for certain art-based degree programs, while some universities charge approximately Ksh140,000 annually, our fees are around Ksh200,000, yet students continue to enroll,” he remarked.
Ministry of Education Stands by Kisii University
Marcella Mwaka, head of Program Accreditation at the Commission for University Education (CUE), defended Kisii University’s capacity to accommodate the students placed there by KUCCPS.
According to Mwaka, the university boasts 317 academic staff members, 91 lecture halls, 14 laboratories, and 3 computer labs.
She also highlighted that Kisii University offers a total of 82 bachelor’s degree programs, positioning it as the third-largest provider of such programs in Kenya.
“We assess universities based on their resources and program accreditation statuses. Kisii University’s 82 bachelor’s degree programs reflect its significant academic offerings, placing it among the top universities in terms of program diversity,” Mwaka explained.
