Kitui Principals Undergo Training for Upcoming CBC Senior School Transition.
In readiness for the 2025 shift from Junior Secondary School (JSS) to Senior Secondary School (SSS), 465 secondary school principals from Kitui County have undergone a comprehensive three-day training.
This initiative, led by the Ministry of Education through the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), aimed to empower school heads with the expertise needed to successfully implement the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework as they engage with Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) learners for the first time.
The sessions were simultaneously conducted at Mulango and Muthale Girls’ Secondary Schools, gathering participants from all corners of the county. Principals were briefed on what awaits them as they prepare to receive the inaugural cohort of Grade 10 learners, including expected challenges and structural changes.
Key updates on CBC guidelines regarding learner selection, placement, and admission into senior schools were presented during the training. It was highlighted that learners would be required to choose one of three specialization pathways: Arts and Sports Science, Social Sciences, or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
At the closing ceremony held at Mulango Girls High School, Kitui County Director of Education Dr. Issack Hassan shared that around 10,000 JSS learners in the county are expected to transition to senior school. He stated that preparations were progressing well to ensure a smooth and successful transition for all learners.
Facilities and Learner Placement Criteria
Dr. Hassan assured participants that Kitui’s existing infrastructure would accommodate all Grade 10 learners. He clarified that placement would consider several factors including learner preference, academic performance, psychometric testing, equity, and institutional capacity.
“There will be fairness for all learners; they will all have an opportunity to choose their pathway from the 3 pathways of senior school education, which will specialize in STEM, arts and sports science, and social sciences,” said Dr. Hassan.

Explaining the new academic structure, Dr. Hassan noted that learners in Grades 10 to 12 would study seven subjects: four core subjects—English, Kiswahili, Community Service Learning, and Physical Education—and three others based on their chosen track. He stressed that all learners would be fairly guided to pursue a suitable pathway aligned with their interests and strengths.
Further emphasizing the importance of technology integration, the Director reminded principals that teachers are now expected to be proficient in ICT to support digital learning methods, including remote instruction and live-streamed lessons. In his concluding remarks, he urged school heads to mobilize and educate all stakeholders within their institutions to foster collective preparedness for the forthcoming transition.
