KMTC and UNHCR Announces Scholarships for Community Health Nursing in Turkana.
The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), has announced the availability of 50 scholarships for Turkana county residents and refugees in the Kakuma and Kolobeyei camps.
These scholarships will support individuals interested in enrolling for a Certificate in Community Health Nursing for the March 2025 intake.
Scholarship Details and Application Process
KMTC CEO, Kelly Oluoch, emphasized the importance of these scholarships for building healthcare capacity in marginalized communities. He noted that the full scholarships, which will be awarded based on merit, would be crucial in improving healthcare services in underserved regions.
The scholarships are available for applicants from Turkana or the refugee camps of Kakuma and Kolobeyei. The deadline for applications is February 14, 2025, and all submissions must be made through the KMTC application portal.
Interested candidates must have a KCSE mean grade of C- or its equivalent, with at least a C- in English or Kiswahili and Biology, and a D+ in either Mathematics, Physics, or Chemistry.
In addition to meeting these academic requirements, applicants must submit a letter of introduction from a local chief, a camp manager, or a UNHCR official, and a short essay (no longer than 200 words) detailing why they want to pursue the Community Health Nursing program.
The course will last two years and will be offered at the KMTC Lodwar campus.
UNHCR’s Ongoing Support for Turkana Residents
This scholarship initiative builds on a similar program launched the previous year, which saw around 6,000 applicants. The collaboration between KMTC and UNHCR is also contributing to the development of infrastructure at the KMTC Lodwar campus.
UNHCR is funding the construction of a new library and tuition block, with plans to further expand the partnership to include additional infrastructure projects.

On January 20, 2025, a high-level delegation from UNHCR, the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the Royal Danish Embassy, and the Grundfos Foundation visited the KMTC Lodwar campus. They inspected ongoing projects, engaged with beneficiaries, and discussed plans for advancing sponsored students from certificate to diploma programs.
This scholarship initiative is part of KMTC’s broader efforts to improve healthcare education and support disadvantaged students.
As the institution prepares for its 100th anniversary in 2027, it continues to seek partnerships that enhance training opportunities and contribute to the improvement of healthcare across Kenya and beyond.
