KMTC Launches New Course to Support Social Health Authority Transition.

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has launched a new course aligned with the government’s strategy to achieve 100% transition of Kenyans to the Social Health Authority (SHA).

KMTC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kelly Oluoch announced the institution’s partnership with the Ministry of Health to facilitate SHA registration and related processes. He highlighted that the introduction of a course in Medical Insurance aims to address the complexities involved in the implementation of SHA.

TSC CEO Explains Why SHA Rejected Over 360,000 Teachers from Health Scheme

The CEO explained that the rollout of SHA would necessitate the availability of adequately trained personnel to handle pre-authorisation, claims management, and efficient service delivery under the new system.

He affirmed that the institution’s research and curriculum development had enabled the creation of the Medical Insurance course, supporting both the President’s and government’s SHA agenda.

Dr. Oluoch emphasized the importance of equipping KMTC students with the skills required to bridge gaps in the healthcare sector. He stressed that this education would play a crucial role in addressing disparities within the medical industry.

He encouraged members of the public to enroll in SHA and fulfill their payment obligations, underscoring the need for a robust system to support public healthcare. He expressed optimism that public participation and compliance with SHA requirements would enhance treatment accessibility for all Kenyans.

Challenges in SHA Rollout

Since its launch in October 2024, the SHA initiative has faced significant challenges, including digital system failures and complaints of bias in coverage.

Although the program aims for universal coverage, the reliance on monthly salary deductions has sparked discontent among Kenyans. Many feel unfairly treated, as the quality of care remains uniform despite varying contributions.

In a related development, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) on January 28 listed several courses available for application at KMTC, including the newly introduced Medical Insurance course.

This addition aligns with the college’s mission to support national healthcare priorities and improve access to skilled professionals in the SHA rollout.
