KNEC Directs Schools to Complete Grade 6 Registration for KPSEA by February 28.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has instructed primary schools to finalize the registration of Grade 6 learners for the upcoming Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) by February 28.
To be eligible, each learner must first be registered on the Grade 6 portal to obtain an assessment number.
Although learners had previously received an assessment number in Grade 3, KNEC is conducting a fresh registration to ensure the accuracy of candidates’ biodata. This unique identifier will be used to complete the KPSEA registration process.
Details for Correction in Registration
The registration exercise commenced on January 27, 2025. Headteachers have been tasked with verifying and correcting specific details before finalizing the process. KNEC has emphasized the need for accuracy in the following details:
- Gender
- Year of Birth
- Citizenship
- Religious education subject registered (IRE, CRE)
- Special needs and disabilities classification, if applicable
- Correct spelling and order of names as per the birth certificate
Warning Against Ghost Candidates
KNEC has cautioned schools against registering non-existent candidates, stating that such malpractice will result in the institution’s deregistration as an assessment center.
The council’s CEO, David Njengere, communicated in a circular to all headteachers that only eligible learners in respective institutions should be registered.
Schools found guilty of registering ghost candidates will face strict sanctions, including loss of their status as KNEC assessment centers. Upon successful completion of registration, schools will be required to download a KPSEA nominal roll.
KPSEA Exam Schedule and Subject Breakdown
The Grade 6 learners will undertake the KPSEA from October 26 to October 30, 2025. In the previous year, 1,303,913 candidates were registered and assessed across 35,573 centers.
The assessment comprised five subjects: Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Integrated Science, and Social Studies and Creative Arts.
Unlike the former KCPE, the assessment did not include creative writing components such as English Composition and Kiswahili Insha.

Competency-Based Assessment for Grade 3 Learners
In addition to the KPSEA registration, KNEC has also opened the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal for Grade 3 learners.
These learners will sit for their first national assessment, the Kenya Early Year Assessment (KEYA), beginning next term. KEYA consists of practical activities conducted in the second term, followed by written assessments in the third term.
The timely registration and accurate submission of learner details remain crucial for a smooth examination process. Schools must comply with the given directives to ensure an efficient assessment period for both Grade 6 and Grade 3 learners.
