KNEC Issues Guidelines for 2025 CBA Projects and Performance Tasks for Grades 4, 5, and SNE.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced guidelines for administering the 2025 School-Based Assessments (SBA) for learners in Grades 4, 5, and the Special Needs Education (SNE) Intermediate Level.
According to the circular, the assessment tools, including projects, practicals, and performance tasks, will be uploaded to the KNEC Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal.
Headteachers are tasked with accessing these tools through the CBA portal at https://cba.knec.ac.ke. In cases of password issues, schools are advised to seek assistance from their respective Sub-County Directors of Education for password reset services.
Teachers are required to administer the tasks, assess learners’ performance, and upload the results onto the portal within the specified timeline. To ensure accurate scoring, teachers must follow the provided guidelines, which detail the criteria for evaluating learners’ performance during the tasks.
KNEC emphasizes that a comprehensive user manual is available on the portal, offering step-by-step instructions on accessing the tools, administering tasks, and uploading results. Schools are encouraged to keep all records and evidence generated during the assessments.
Timelines for Uploading Scores
The submission of assessment scores has strict deadlines, varying by grade and subject:
- Grade 4: Projects in Science & Technology, Creative Arts & Sports, and Agriculture & Nutrition must be completed and scores uploaded between March 3 and May 31, 2025.
- Grade 5: Similar projects follow the same deadlines as Grade 4.
- SNE Intermediate Level: Performance tasks across various areas, such as Daily Living Skills, Religious Education, and Environmental Activities, must adhere to the same timeline.
KNEC encourages schools to source materials for these assessments from the local environment or improvise where necessary. The circular further instructs headteachers to maintain all evidence and documentation related to the assessments for accountability.

Dr. David Njengere, KNEC’s Chief Executive Officer, reiterated the importance of timely preparation and adherence to the provided guidelines. He stressed that schools should ensure they have the necessary resources and systems in place to meet the requirements effectively.
One headteacher noted that these directives are manageable but require clear communication and collaboration at all levels. Another teacher expressed confidence that the guidelines would streamline the assessment process, ensuring consistency in evaluating learners’ competencies.
These measures aim to enhance the successful implementation of competency-based education in Kenya, fostering a practical and innovative approach to learning.
