KNEC Opens KCSE Repeat Exam Registration for July Series: Timetable and How to Register.

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has announced the registration and guidelines for the upcoming Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) repeat exams, scheduled to take place from July 1 to August 1, 2025.

This initiative, outlined by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, provides an opportunity for candidates to improve their grades or complete previously missed exams.

Registration Period and Process

Registration for the KCSE repeat exams begins on Monday, January 27, and will close on February 21.

According to a circular issued to all county directors of education, the process will be coordinated at county headquarters through the offices of County Directors of Education (CDEs) using the KNEC registration portal.

KNEC emphasized that candidates must present themselves at their respective county headquarters within the registration window to complete the process. Documents required for registration include:

The KCSE repeat exams are open to specific categories of candidates, including:

  • Partial repeaters registering for fewer than seven subjects.
  • Candidates who registered for prior exams but were unable to sit them due to unavoidable circumstances like illness.
  • Adult learners with proof of primary education qualifications, provided they are not in regular schools.

KNEC clarified that first-time KCSE candidates from regular schools and individuals lacking required qualifications under its regulations are ineligible. Repeaters and private candidates must register for the July series and not the November KCSE series.

Exam Schedule

The exams will commence this month with the administration of project-based assessments for Art and Design, Agriculture, Woodwork, Metalwork, Building Construction, and Computer Studies running between January and July 2025. Theory and practical papers will be conducted from July 1 to August 1, 2025.

Results and Certification

Candidates repeating seven or more subjects will be issued new KCSE certificates, while those retaking fewer than seven subjects will receive a result slip for the repeated subjects. This measure aims to maintain clarity and accuracy in the certification process.

David Njengere, KNEC CEO, remarked that repeat exams offer a second chance for candidates to achieve their academic goals, underscoring the importance of timely registration and adherence to guidelines.

Education CS Julius Ogamba highlighted the critical role of the July exam series in fostering educational inclusivity and equity, encouraging all eligible candidates to take advantage of the initiative.
