KNEC Releases Schedule for Grade 9 KJSEA Exams.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has unveiled the timeline for the Grade 9 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), scheduled to commence on 27th October 2025, concurrently with the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).

Grade 8 learners will advance to Grade 9 in January 2025, culminating their Junior Secondary School (JSS) education with the KJSEA in October 2025. The examination, comprising eleven examinable papers, is set to conclude on 6th November 2025.

Piloting of KJSEA

KNEC piloted the KJSEA earlier in 2024 with current Grade 8 learners from 235 schools. This exercise, held between 15th July and 19th July 2024, provided insights into the exam’s structure and readiness for its full implementation.

Exam Structure and Setup

The KJSEA for Grade 9 encompasses various subjects, each with a specific paper setup. Below is an overview of the examinable subjects:

Kiswahili

  • Paper 1: Multiple-choice questions focusing on grammar and language use.
  • Paper 2: Divided into five sections:
    1. Composition writing
    2. Oral literature
    3. Novels
    4. Plays
    5. Poetry
  • Total Marks: 50

Agriculture and Nutrition (Paper 906/1)

  • Section A: 30 marks, multiple-choice questions.
  • Section B: 40 marks, structured questions based on tasks.

Integrated Science

  • Section A: 30 marks, multiple-choice questions.
  • Section B: 40 marks, structured questions.

English

  • Paper 901/1: Multiple-choice questions (50 marks).
  • Paper 901/2:
    • Imaginative composition: 15 marks
    • Oral narrative: 10 marks
    • Poetry: 5 marks
    • Novella: 10 marks
    • Play: 10 marks
    • Total: 50 marks

Mathematics

  • Multiple-choice section:
    • Questions on numbers, algebra, inequalities, measurement, geometry, and data handling.
  • Structured questions:
    • Task 1 (29% weight): Numbers
    • Other tasks cover algebra, measurement, and geometry using a compass and ruler.
    • Maximum Score: No single question exceeds 5 marks, with 80% allocated to structured questions.
