KNEC Sets End of July Deadline for SBA Project Score Submissions

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has mandated that primary and junior schools complete and submit their 2024 School-Based Assessment (SBA) project scores within a week.

However, there is speculation that KNEC may extend this deadline by another week to accommodate more schools.

In a circular dated March 6, 2024, KNEC provided detailed instructions to schools on the execution of the 2024 projects.

The guidelines included timelines for downloading, administering, and submitting the project scores through KNEC’s online platform.

Assessment Breakdown

Primary School
  • Grades 4 and 5: The SBA scores account for 40% of the final scores in the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), conducted at the end of Grade 6.
  • Grade 3: Students complete school-based assessment projects annually in the second term.
  • Grade 6: Learners do not undertake projects as they prepare for their final KPSEA assessment.
Junior School
  • Grades 7 and 8: The SBA scores contribute 40% to the final scores in the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), held at the end of Grade 9.
  • Grade 9: Students focus on preparing for the KJSEA final assessment and do not have projects.
Senior School
  • Grades 10 and 11: SBA projects are conducted annually in the second term.
  • Grade 12: Learners concentrate on their final Kenya Senior School Education Assessment (KSSEA) before proceeding to tertiary education, thus do not engage in projects.

Annual Written Tests

In addition to projects, KNEC administers written tests every year during the third term for all primary and junior schools. This year, the written tests are scheduled from September 30 to October 24, 2024.

Second Term SBA Projects

During the second term, SBA projects covered a variety of subjects. The projects included different areas of study, tailored to each grade’s curriculum. A summary of these projects by subject per grade will provide further insight into their scope and content.

Grade 8 Projects
  • Creative Arts & Sports:
    • Choral verse in English or Kiswahili in groups of 8-12, addressing societal issues appropriate for the learners’ age and level.
    • Perform netball skills: overhead pass, double feet landing, and pivoting.
    • Five-scale value gradation strip.
    • Still life drawing or painting from observation.
  • Integrated Science:
    • Demonstrate osmosis in living tissues.
Grade 7 Projects
  • Creative Arts and Sports:
    • Make an ornament (necklace) and exhibit artwork.
    • Perform a Kenyan indigenous folk song.
    • Catching, dribbling, and standing shot in sports activities.
  • Integrated Science:
    • Create a model of the human urinary system.
  • CRE:
    • Present messages during Drugs and Substance Abuse Awareness Day, covering topics such as commonly abused drugs, reasons for abuse, effects, life skills to avoid abuse, and preventive measures.
Grades 5 Projects
  • Creative Arts:
    • Decorate old items using mosaic methods.
    • Perform a folk dance from a Kenyan indigenous community.
    • Batting and fielding skills in rounders.
  • Science & Technology:
    • Make a toy using solid waste materials.
  • Social Studies:
    • Create awareness on caring for environmental resources during World Nature Conservation Day.
Grade 4 Projects
  • Creative Arts:
    • Draw a still-life composition of two percussion instruments.
    • Perform an improvisational rhythm task on a percussion instrument.
    • Chest pass and two-handed ball catch activities.
  • Science & Technology:
    • Create an air pollution detector using locally available materials.

The SBA projects and assessments are essential components of the Kenyan education system, contributing significantly to the final evaluations of students at various levels.
