KNEC Starts KJSEA Examiner Training Despite Teacher Frustrations.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has initiated online training for teachers selected to mark the upcoming Grade 9 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA). This move comes ahead of the final assessment for the pioneer cohort under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), set to take place between October and November 2025.
Originally slated for March, the training was rescheduled to April following concerns that teachers would be heavily engaged in school programs during the initial month.
The training begins with an online orientation phase designed to introduce and prepare participants before progressing to the main course. After this digital introduction, teachers will attend in-person sessions at designated residential venues. KNEC will communicate the physical training locations after participants complete the online module.
Only shortlisted candidates were invited via SMS and required to make a payment of KES 10,500 to secure their training slot. The payment, made through a paybill number, had to be validated on KNEC’s examiners’ portal.
This process led to challenges for some teachers, with several reporting being locked out despite completing payment. KNEC has advised affected teachers to reach out for assistance.
The KJSEA will encompass practicals, projects, and written theory exams. Candidates will begin with the Creative Arts and Sports Project in May, running through July. They will also work on a Pre-Technical Studies Project throughout July. The theory and practical assessments are scheduled to take place from October 24 to November 5, 2025.
Registration for candidates concluded on March 28, 2025, and the exams will feature 24 distinct papers across various disciplines. Teachers will be trained in the marking of each of these subjects.
