The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has uploaded the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) sample papers on the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal.
These sample papers are now available for all schools. Below is a step-by-step guide on how schools can access these materials.
Accessing the CBA Portal
- Navigate to the CBA portal using the link: cba.knec.ac.ke.
- Log into the portal using your assessment center’s login credentials.

Locating the Grade 8 Portal
- Once logged in, select the Grade 8 portal.
Viewing and Downloading Sample Papers
- Click on the “Instructions & Sample Papers” button.
- The uploaded sample papers will be displayed on the screen.
- To view a specific sample paper, use the “View” button.
- For downloading, click on the “Download” button provided for each paper.
Ensuring System Security
- After completing your activities, log out of the system.
- Keep your login credentials confidential to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data.

KENYA JUNIOR SCHOOL EDUCATION ASSESSMENTS (KJSEA)
Overview of KJSEA Exam Structure
The Kenya Junior School Education Assessments (KJSEA) questions are modeled after the pilot exams conducted from July 15, 2024, to July 19, 2024. These assessments aim to evaluate Grade 9 learners across various subjects through a comprehensive and structured approach.
Examinable Papers for Grade 9 KJSEA
The following papers are included in the Grade 9 KJSEA assessments:
- 901 – English: Comprising two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2).
- 902 – Kiswahili: Comprising two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2).
- 903 – Mathematics: A single paper.
- 904 – Kenya Sign Language: Comprising two papers.
- 905 – Integrated Science: Two papers, including Theory and Practical.
- 906 – Agriculture and Nutrition: Two papers, including Theory and Project.
- 907 – Social Studies and Life Skills: A single paper.
- 908 – CRE: A single paper.
- 909 – IRE: A single paper.
- 911 – Creative Arts and Sports: Two papers, including Theory and Practical.
- 912 – Pre-Technical Studies: Two papers, including Theory and Project.
Subject Breakdown and Marking Scheme
Kiswahili Exam Structure
Paper 1 consists of multiple-choice questions focusing on language. Paper 2 is divided into five sections:
- Essay writing.
- Oral literature.
- Novella analysis.
- Play analysis.
- Poetry analysis. The total marks for Kiswahili are capped at 50.
Agriculture and Nutrition
Paper 906/1 includes the following sections:
- Section A: Multiple-choice questions (30 marks).
- Section B: Structured questions (40 marks). The tests are organized around three distinct tasks.
Integrated Science
This paper is structured into two main sections:
- Section A: Multiple-choice questions (30 marks).
- Section B: Structured questions (40 marks).
English Exam Structure
- Paper 901/1: Comprises multiple-choice questions worth 50 marks.
- Paper 901/2: Includes various components such as:
- Imaginative composition (15 marks).
- Oral narrative (10 marks).
- Poetry analysis (5 marks).
- Novella analysis (10 marks).
- Play analysis (10 marks). The total marks for Paper 2 are 50.
Mathematics Exam Structure
The Mathematics paper includes multiple-choice and structured questions.
- Multiple-choice questions:
- Questions 1-7: Numbers.
- Questions 8-10: Algebra and inequalities.
- Questions 11-17: Measurement.
- Questions 18-19: Geometry and construction.
- Question 20: Data handling and probability.
- Structured questions:
- Questions 21-28: Task 1 (Numbers, 29%).
- Questions 29-31: Algebra and inequalities.
- Questions 32-37: Measurement.
- Questions 38-39: Geometry and construction (tasks using a compass and ruler).
- Question 40: Data handling and probability.
The maximum score for a single question is 5 marks, and structured questions contribute up to 80% of the total score.
