Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) Asked to Recognize Higher Diploma as Degree.

A proposal has been put forward urging the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) to acknowledge the higher diploma as equivalent to a degree.

Western Regional Director of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Joseph Sunguti, emphasized the need for KNQA to streamline training programs, ensuring that students holding higher diplomas can advance their education rather than face limitations.

He pointed out that in other countries, a higher diploma is regarded as a degree, enabling students to apply for master’s programs. However, in Kenya, such students are often denied this opportunity.

During a public participation forum at Sigalagala National Polytechnic in Kakamega County on the Kenya National Qualification Authority draft bill, Sunguti expressed concern over inconsistencies in the education system. He criticized the practice of appending the term “equivalent” to presented certificates, questioning its meaning when the certification has already been issued.

Sunguti also underscored the value of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in shaping the country’s future but urged KNQA to formally certify skilled workers in the Jua Kali sector.

He noted that RPL could help address biases in tendering processes, which often favor individuals with formal academic credentials over experienced artisans. He lamented that despite their expertise, many Jua Kali workers remain uncertified, limiting their opportunities.

By integrating the informal sector into TVET institutions, Sunguti argued, the country could achieve a balanced workforce.

At the same event, Shamberere National Polytechnic Principal, Elisha Nyamu, who contributed to drafting the bill in Naivasha, hailed the proposed legislation as transformative. He encouraged local residents to share their input to prevent future criticism once it becomes law.

Nyamu emphasized that the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (General) Regulations 2025 would strengthen the implementation of KNQA by introducing a structured and standardized system for regulating, aligning, and validating qualifications.
