KNQA Appointed to Lead Africa-Wide Education Standards Reforms.
Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) has been selected to spearhead the African Continental Qualifications Framework (ACQF) Network, placing the country at the center of a transformative educational movement. This leadership role underlines Africa’s commitment to fostering harmonized, quality-assured qualifications systems across the continent.
The Authority’s Acting Director General, Dr. Alice Kande, will guide the ACQF Network in aligning educational qualifications, aiming to standardize and improve quality benchmarks continent-wide. Alongside Kenya, South Africa and Zambia—represented by their respective qualifications authorities—have also been appointed under the troika leadership to drive this initiative.
Kenya earned the nomination due to its progress in implementing the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF), which has become a reference point for other African countries. The KNQA’s success in building a comprehensive qualifications system has been instrumental in this recognition. According to Dr. Kande, this progress demonstrates the country’s leadership in education quality assurance and alignment practices across the region.
She further noted that the recognition positions Kenya as an influential player in shaping education systems continentally. With this role, KNQA will have the opportunity to share its expertise and engage in mutual learning with other education powerhouses such as Mauritius and South Africa.
Dr. Kande emphasized that KNQA’s new continental responsibility extends beyond national borders. She observed that the authority now plays a vital role in shaping Pan-African education standards and policies. The position will open avenues for international partnerships, technical support, and funding that will benefit both Kenya and the broader continent.
She stated that KNQA is ready to drive reforms and harmonization by establishing a continental platform to support qualification recognition and mobility. Dr. Kande remarked, “This role enables us to link our systems with others across Africa, improving opportunities for learners and professionals alike.”
Enhancing Recognition through Technology
KNQA has developed a digital, continent-wide database that serves as a centralized hub for verified qualifications, ranging from vocational certifications to degrees. This system, backed by verification tools and digital credentialing technology, ensures that only authentic academic credentials are recognized.
Dr. Kande said the platform is set to revolutionize credential verification. She explained that employers will soon be able to verify applicants’ qualifications through a unified digital system, significantly reducing costs and eliminating forgery. She also mentioned that credit systems and level descriptors are being created to allow easy comparison of qualifications between African nations.
By spearheading the ACQF, KNQA is tasked with increasing the portability of qualifications across Africa and internationally. This development will expand opportunities for African workers and learners by allowing their credentials to be recognized continentally. Dr. Kande stressed that labor mobility is crucial in addressing skills gaps and unlocking economic potential across African economies.
The Authority is also mandated to facilitate quality assurance mechanisms through shared principles, peer reviews, and continuous improvement across national agencies. These initiatives will preserve educational standards and build trust in African qualifications.
Part of KNQA’s new responsibility involves accelerating the digital transformation of qualification systems. This includes promoting the use of mobile apps for verification, enhancing transparency through digital credential systems, and supporting institutional digitization across Africa.
In addition, the Authority will help develop and harmonize policies that support qualification recognition while respecting national sovereignty. Collaborative efforts with other African states will ensure that these policies are inclusive and sustainable.

Through its leadership role, KNQA will not only connect African qualifications systems but also strengthen their integration with global frameworks. Kenya will now have representation in international discussions on qualifications and the ability to negotiate recognition with entities like the European Union.
National Qualification Frameworks (NQFs), including KNQF, have long served as tools for promoting mutual trust, transparency, and cooperation in education. KNQA is thus aligning with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and contributing to the development of the IGAD Qualifications Framework, aimed at enhancing regional qualification recognition.
Dr. Kande summed up the significance of the appointment: “Our work is now part of a larger mission to unify Africa’s education systems and to raise the profile of African qualifications on the global stage.”
