KNUT: 99% of Junior Secondary Schools in Malindi, Magarini Have No Science Labs
A staggering ninety-nine percent of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in Malindi and Magarini sub-counties in Kilifi County lack Science laboratories, as revealed by Education News. This deficiency poses significant challenges to effective learning and teaching in the region.
Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Malindi branch Executive Secretary and KNUT Kilifi Chairman, Moses Mramba, recently highlighted the dire state of school infrastructure during an interview at his office in Malindi town.
He reported that Grade 9 learners in the region are unable to conduct Science tests due to the absence of laboratories, a situation he described as alarming.
Mramba underscored that the learning environment in the county remains unconducive, largely due to the lack of essential facilities. He called for immediate intervention by education stakeholders to improve school infrastructure and create a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The Executive Secretary attributed poor performance in national examinations to the failure of parents and leaders to provide adequate physical learning facilities.
He urged county residents to collaborate with local leaders to equip schools with necessary resources to boost academic performance.
Additionally, he advised parents and leaders to focus on identifying and addressing the root causes of poor performance rather than placing undue blame on teachers.
Call for Guidance and Counseling
Mramba also encouraged secondary school head teachers in Kilifi County to establish guidance and counseling departments in their schools. He emphasized that such initiatives could play a crucial role in reducing the prevalence of student strikes and fostering a better learning environment.
When contacted for a comment, Malindi Sub-county Director of Education, Rashid Robir, acknowledged the absence of Science laboratories in the area’s JSS.

However, he noted that the government has already constructed several classrooms in the sub-county to enhance school operations. This step, while commendable, falls short of addressing the pressing need for Science laboratories.
The lack of Science laboratories in Malindi and Magarini remains a critical challenge that demands urgent attention from all education stakeholders to ensure effective learning for the region’s students.
