KNUT Appeals to Government Over Gen Z Protests and JSS Teacher Concerns
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Kisumu branch, has urged the government to swiftly address the demands of Generation Z to end the ongoing protests and restore normalcy as schools resume.
The demonstrations, primarily led by youthful Kenyans, have caused significant disruptions.
David Obuon, the Executive Secretary of KNUT Kisumu branch, addressed the press, highlighting that many urban schools depend on public transport, which has been severely affected by the protests. He reported that due to this disruption, learners have been stranded.
Obuon mentioned that a Kisumu school was recently tear-gassed, forcing learners and teachers to flee for safety. This incident caused significant distress among learners, and their security remains a concern.
The Union has called on the government to release capitation funds to schools promptly to ensure smooth operations.
Obuon emphasized that ongoing sports activities and music festivals are challenged by the lack of funding.
He noted the government’s promise to build classrooms and facilities for grade 9 but expressed uncertainty about which schools have received the funds.
Teacher Employment and Welfare
Regarding Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers, Obuon urged the government to adhere to its initial stance and the court’s decision to confirm intern teaching staff on permanent and pensionable terms.
He stressed that teachers should not be treated as casualties of the suspended Controversial Finance Bill 2024, which President Ruto indicated would impact the employment of JSS teachers. Obuon underscored the importance of motivating teachers to inspire learners.
Obuon added that well-paid teachers would be motivated to deliver quality education. He also highlighted the need for promoting teachers due for promotion and ensuring that delayed salaries are paid.

He called on the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Ezekiel Machogu, to improve the management of his ministry.
